What Should Homeschooling Look Like? The Relaxed Homeschool Way For Teens
What Should Homeschooling Look Like?
The Relaxed Homeschool Way For Middle/Highschool
For a relaxed homeschool family, flexibility is key. Incorporate plenty of hands-on learning, field trips, and real-life experiences. Let the child's interests guide the curriculum, and don't stress about rigid schedules or standardized testing. Emphasize exploration, creativity, and a love of learning. For the mom who needs to see examples or timeline ideas, I have compiled a simple relaxed homeschool day for you. Remember, your days will not all look the same and that's ok!
Here's an example of a day in the life of a relaxed homeschooling family with a middle/high school-aged child:
9:00 AM - Wake up and have a relaxed breakfast together as a family. Your kids may need 20 minutes or so to check their phone, watch a show or read before coming to the table.
10:00 AM - Begin the day with a discussion about current events or a topic of interest. This could involve reading articles online, watching a documentary, or listening to a podcast together. You may choose to use this time for Bible study or a devotional, cooking breakfast together or a wordsearch.
11:00 AM - Dive into the core subjects like math, science, history, and language arts. Use a mix of workbooks, books on the topic, online resources, and hands-on activities to keep things engaging and interactive. This could be sitting in the back yard for creative writing or poetry. It could be math games, a masterclass etc.
1:00 PM - Take a break for lunch and some downtime. Encourage your teens to pursue their own interests during this time, whether it's playing music, writing, or exploring a hobby.
2:00 PM - Resume learning with elective subjects such as art, music, or an “interest topic” such as dragons, gardening, woodworking, conspiracies, life skills etc.. Allow your teens to choose projects or topics that interest them, fostering independence and self-directed learning.
4:00 PM - Outdoor time! Go for a walk, bike ride, or engage in some physical activity together as a family. This is a great opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air while also bonding as a family.
5:30 PM - Dinner preparation begins, with your teens taking on more responsibility in the kitchen, perhaps trying out new recipes or cooking techniques.
7:00 PM - Enjoy dinner together as a family, discussing the day's learning experiences and sharing any highlights or challenges.
8:00 PM - Evening activities could include independent study time for the teenager to work on projects, homework, or personal interests. This could also be a time for family game nights, movie marathons, or simply relaxing together.
10:00 PM - Begin winding down for bedtime, encouraging the teenager to engage in some quiet activities like reading or journaling before lights out.
This schedule provides structure and routine while still allowing plenty of flexibility for the teenager to explore their interests and take ownership of their learning. Be sure to give teens plenty of time for interests and hobbies while encouraging entrepreneurship, volunteering and homeschool group meet-ups. This type of schedule will allow for a well rounded teen.
Happy Homeschooling,
