Building a High School Curriculum for Homeschool Moms
Welcome, homeschool moms! As we embark on the journey of crafting a high school curriculum for our children, let's explore some simple and effective ideas to ensure their success. In this blog post, we'll cover key subjects like English, math, science, social studies, and electives, making it easy for you to create a well-rounded and engaging educational experience.
1. English/Language Arts:
- Reading and Writing: Choose a mix of classic and contemporary books for your child to read and discuss. Encourage them to write essays, stories, and journal entries to practice their writing skills. Many of our independent learning workbooks encourage writing research papers. You can find them here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/search?q=Independent%20learning
We also offer a fun selection of writ8ng workbooks for kids who are creative and love dragons. You can find them here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/homeschoolpdfs/p/dragons-copywork-creative-writing-art-ages-8
And fairytale writing here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/homeschoolpdfs/p/fairytales-reading-planning-writing-drawing-ages-8
2. Mathematics:
- Math Skills: Focus on fundamental math concepts like algebra, geometry, and basic calculus. Use textbooks, online resources, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning. Remember that you're guiding your child in their journey. Not everyone thrives in math. Knowing basic concepts will be enough if your child isn't majoring in a math heavy field.
We offer math basics at Books & Whimsy. Here are a few that we love: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/search?q=Math
3. Science:
- Hands-On Science: Explore biology, chemistry, and physics through fun experiments and projects. Visit museums, conduct simple experiments at home, and watch educational videos to bring science to life. We offer an amazing selection of independent learning options here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/search?q=Science
4. Social Studies/History:
- History Lessons: Teach your child about world history, American history, and important civics topics. Use documentaries, historical fiction books, and field trips to make learning engaging and memorable. We offer an incredible independent learning option here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/homeschoolpdfs/p/history-of-the-world-social-studies-curriculum
5. Electives:
- Fun Extras: Let your child explore their interests with elective courses like art, music, foreign languages, computer programming, cryptozoology, investing, and more. Encourage them to pursue hobbies and interests outside of traditional academics. This is where their passions come alive. Encourage them to dive deeper into topics of interest. At Books and Whimsy we offer an incredible variety of elective topics. You can find a few of them here: https://www.booksnwhimsy.com/search?q=Elective
So, creating a high school curriculum doesn't have to be complicated. By focusing on core subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, and incorporating fun and engaging electives, you can provide your child with a well-rounded education that prepares them for the future. Remember to keep things simple, flexible, and tailored to your child's unique needs and interests. Many curriculum choices can be adapted to challenge your child through homeschool. You can make our curriculum as easy or as difficult as your child needs. With a stack of books, documentaries and gathered resources, you can make the most of your homeschool highschool years!
Happy homeschooling!
