Tracking Grades & Transcripts For Unschoolers
Tracking an unschooler's work for grades and transcripts can be a bit different from traditional schooling methods. As a homeschool mom with one graduate unschooler under my belt, I'd like to give you a few tips.
1. Document Learning Experiences:
Keep a detailed record of the learning experiences your unschooler engages in. This could include projects, field trips, workshops, volunteer work, online courses, etc.
2. Maintain a Portfolio:
Create a portfolio showcasing your unschooler's work, accomplishments, and learning progress. Include photos, videos, samples of work, and any certificates or awards earned.
3. Set Learning Goals:
Collaborate with your unschooler to set learning goals and objectives. Document progress towards these goals and the skills they acquire along the way.
4. Keep a Journal:
Encourage your unschooler to keep a journal or diary where they can reflect on their learning experiences, challenges, and achievements. This can also serve as evidence of their learning journey.
5. Use Self-Evaluation:
Encourage your unschooler to self-assess their learning progress and provide input on their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
6. Seek External Assessment:
Consider incorporating external assessments such as standardized tests, evaluations by mentors or experts, or participation in community-based programs or competitions.
7. Create Transcripts:
When it comes time to create transcripts for college applications or other purposes, compile all relevant documentation, including the portfolio, records of learning experiences, self-assessments, and external assessments. Present this information in a clear and organized format, highlighting your unschooler's unique learning journey and achievements. A great tool for keeping track of transcripts can be found at FastTranscripts.com
Remember, the key is to focus on documenting the learning process rather than adhering to traditional grading methods. Emphasize the skills, knowledge, and experiences gained through unschooling rather than simply assigning letter grades.
